If you are thinking about having bamboo flooring in your home, you may want to know about its pros and cons.

What are the advantages of Bamboo Flooring?

Bamboo is a great flooring choice.  First of all, it is becoming more and more popular due to its eco-friendly properties. It is a fast-growing grass that reaches maturity in a quarter of the time of hardwood trees.  This also makes it more cost effective than hardwood.  Bamboo is sustainable and environmentally friendly. If you are looking for a durable and hard wearing floor, you may want to consider strand woven bamboo.  It is over twice as hard as Oak flooring, making it ideal for busy areas or commercial properties. Bamboo flooring is extremely versatile.  It can be installed over almost any subfloor and used in most rooms in your home. Bamboo is dimensionally stable, meaning that it can be used in rooms with fluctuating temperatures.  Some types can also be used with underfloor heating

It is easy to install.  You have a choice to either float it over an underlay or fix it down to the subfloor with nails or glue. When choosing your bamboo flooring, there is a wide range to look at.  Different colours, styles, grain patterns, surface finishes and plank sizes.  You can even find bamboo parquet block flooring if you want something a bit different. You will be able to complement your bamboo floor with matching flooring accessories, such as skirting, beading, door bars and pipe covers. Finally, you will find bamboo flooring hygienic, easy to clean and great for allergy sufferers. If you adopt a daily cleaning routine of sweeping away dust and dirt, there is nowhere for pet hair or other allergens to hide.  Have a look at our Care and Maintenance Guide for more tips and advice.

What are the disadvantages of Bamboo Flooring?

Although bamboo flooring is water resistant, it is by no means waterproof.  You should never use bamboo flooring outside, in a bathroom or any other area with excessive water.  Bamboo is a natural product so would try to absorb any extra water or liquid surrounding it, so it is essential to make sure your subfloor is completely dry before installation.

You should also wipe away any spills or water accidents from the surface of your bamboo immediately. Bamboo is known for its durability and strength, but it is not indestructible!  Although it is a hard wearing floor covering, you may still find scratches and dents to the surface if you do not look after it properly.  Make sure that you use felt protector pads on the bottom of furniture.  You should also be careful when moving heavy objects or furniture.  Never drag things across the floor, always lift them up and place them down gently
