Problems with Bamboo Flooring: Moisture Damage

This entry was posted on October 20, 2015 by chris elliott

If your subfloor was not completely dry before the bamboo flooring was installed, then you may have problems with moisture damage to your flooring.   Over time the bamboo will absorb any excess moisture and is more than likely going to warp and distort.

How to prevent moisture damage from happening

Before you start to install your bamboo flooring you need to ensure that the subfloor is completely dry, by testing it with a wooden floor moisture meter.  The Moisture Content (MC) should be at the following levels:

• Below 6% MC for a concrete subfloor

• 16% MC or below for wooden floor boards, plywood or chipboard

If after testing, you discover that the subfloor is not dry enough, it should be left to dry naturally before being tested again.

How to resolve moisture damage once it has happened

Once moisture damage to bamboo flooring has occurred, there is very little that can be done to resolve the problem.  The only resolution is to take up you bamboo flooring, ensure the subfloor is dry and then install new planks of flooring.
