Problems with Bamboo Flooring: Uneven Subfloor

This entry was posted on October 26, 2015 by chris elliott

Your subfloor (the existing floor in your property) needs to be level before any bamboo flooring is installed. If it is not level then the planks of bamboo will be put under duress when walked upon, and over time it could start to creak, squeak and may move.

How to prevent an uneven subfloor from happening

You must check that your subfloor is completely level by using a straight edge or spirit level.  Only when you are sure that it is flat can you start to install your bamboo flooring.  If it is not completely flat then it needs to be levelled out by either lining a wooden subfloor with plywood sheets of at least 8mm thick, or use a self levelling compound on a concrete subfloor.

How to resolve the problem once it has happened

If your bamboo flooring is already damaged from an uneven subfloor there is very little that can be done as the planks of flooring are already damaged.  The best thing to do is remove the damaged bamboo, level your subfloor and the install new flooring.
