Should I choose horizontal or vertical bamboo flooring?

When deciding whether to choose horizontal or vertical bamboo flooring, there are a few things that you should know. Both types of bamboo flooring are very similar in the type of bamboo they are made from, durability levels and fitting methods.  The main difference between the two is the grain pattern that you will see once the flooring is installed.

Which one you should choose is completely up to you, based on your personal preferences.  Either a narrow grain, or a more classic wider grain pattern?

What are the main differences between horizontal or vertical bamboo flooring?

The main difference between the two floors is the way that they look.  Horizontal bamboo flooring has a wider grain pattern, with visible knots and characteristics of bamboo.  Alternatively, vertical bamboo flooring has a narrow and streamlines grain pattern, which is very distinctive and unique.

These differences are due to the way that each floor has been constructed. Horizontal bamboo has been made from strips of bamboo bonded together horizontally, whereas vertical bamboo has strips bonded together vertically.

Are there any similarities?

Yes, there are many similarities between the two floors.  Here are just a few:

  • They are both made from thin strips of bamboo, which has been dried and bonded together.
  • You have the choice of either a natural golden colour, or a coffee carbonised brown.
  • Both are as durable as each other – a hard as Oak flooring.
  • They are fitted with a tongue and groove fitting system.
  • Both are extremely versatile. They can be used in most rooms in your home and can be floated over an underlay or fixed down.
  • Finally, you will also find them easy to look after and keep clean.
