Bamboo flooring is a fantastic alternative to hardwood flooring and quickly becoming a very popular choice for domestic and commercial use. Here are a few reasons why you should choose bamboo:

Bamboo is an eco-friendly material

Bamboo is a highly renewable grass that can grow to maturity within five years, making it a very sustainable, natural material. It grows much faster than hardwood trees that can take over twenty five years to reach maturity. Another benefit to the environment is that bamboo does not need to be re-planted like trees; the grass root will continue to grow once it has been harvested.

What are the benefits of bamboo flooring - sustainable

Bamboo is an inexpensive flooring choice

Bamboo is an inexpensive alternative to hardwood flooring, but still offers the luxury of a natural product. It can be around a third cheaper than an average hardwood floor. The reason for this is because the raw materials are cheaper than wood, since there is more of it because it can be harvested every five years.

Bamboo is harder and more durable than hardwood flooring

Strand woven bamboo is a very hard, strong and durable flooring material, making it a good choice for both commercial and domestic use. It is over twice as strong as Oak flooring and is dimensionally stable meaning that it does not expand and contract as much as some hardwood floors. Vertical bamboo and horizontal bamboo are also very durable and stable, and are as hard as Oak flooring. All types of bamboo flooring are more moisture resistant and less likely to obtain water damaged, stains and warping than hardwood flooring.

Bamboo flooring is dimensionally stable

Bamboo flooring is dimensionally stable, so does not expand and contract as much as some hardwood floors. This means it can be:

• Used with underfloor heating

• Loose laid over an underlay (does not need fixing in position)

• Installed in areas of fluctuating temperature and humidity

• Installed on almost any subfloor

Bamboo is quick and easy to install

Both engineered bamboo flooring and solid bamboo flooring are dimensionally stable so do not need fixing in place, meaning that they can be installed in a number of ways depending on your requirements:

• Loose laid / floated over an underlay

• Glued down using a flexible flooring adhesive

• Secret nailed or secret screwed down

Bamboo flooring is also available in a click fitting system or tongue and groove profile making installation even more straight forward.

Bamboo flooring is easy to look after

Bamboo flooring is very easy to maintain. It should be swept with a soft brush and cleaned with a PH neutral wooden floor cleaner and microfibre cloth on a regular basis. Damage and scratches can be prevented by removing shoes before walking on bamboo flooring, using anti-scratch felt pads on the bottom of furniture and wiping up spills immediately.

Bamboo flooring is available in a variety of styles, colours and finishes

The three main varieties are vertical bamboo, horizontal bamboo and strand woven bamboo. These three types of bamboo flooring are constructed either using vertical strips of bamboo, horizontal strips of bamboo or strands of bamboo woven together. They offer three different appearances to the surface of the flooring. All three types of flooring are available in either solid bamboo or engineered bamboo format.

In addition to this, there are two main colours of bamboo flooring: natural and carbonised (smoked), although unique colours can be achieved by staining the floor. There are also different finishes, including a natural finish and a handscraped effect that gives a more traditional and distressed appearance. Bamboo flooring accessories are also available to complement the choice of flooring and add finishing touches to the room.

Bamboo is ideal for allergy sufferers

Bamboo floors are ideal for allergy sufferers as they do not collect dust like a carpet does. Bamboo flooring is also resistant to mould and mildew that can be encouraged to grow in deep pile carpets.
