Vertical bamboo flooring is an excellent alternative to hardwood as it is durable, eco-friendly and reasonably priced. It has a similar hardness to Oak flooring but has a unique and distinctive appearance. With vertical bamboo flooring the bamboo grain is less evident as it is thin strips of bamboo constructed vertically to form a plank of flooring.

Its appearance is very different from horizontal bamboo because the seams and edges are visible giving more textured look. It is available in natural (pale, golden brown tones), carbonised (rich, darker brown tones), or with a variety of colour stains to suit personal preference. Hand scraped finishes are also available to provide a more traditional and rustic look to the bamboo flooring.

Vertical bamboo flooring is a very durable, stable and versatile product, meaning that it can be installed with underfloor heating and in rooms with changeable humidity and temperatures. Its stability means that it does not need fixing in place during installation, so can be floated over an underlay, or if required it can be nailed, screwed or glued directly on to the subfloor. Like other types of bamboo flooring, vertical bamboo is easy and straight forward to install and needs very little care and maintenance.

How is vertical bamboo flooring made?

As bamboo is a fast growing grass it can be harvested every five years once it has reached maturity. The bamboo is cut down, dried and then cut into individual strips. Carbonised vertical bamboo flooring can be achieved by smoking the raw strips of bamboo, or alternatively if natural vertical bamboo flooring is required the strips are left in their natural state. The strips of bamboo are glued together vertically and machined into planks of flooring. A colour stain can be added at this stage in the process if required. A protective layer of lacquer is then added to the surface of the planks, before they are machined with either a tongue and groove or click system profile. Finally another layer of lacquer is added and the vertical bamboo flooring is ready to be packaged.
