If you choose a bamboo floor you are more than likely going to need an underlay too.  All of our bamboo floors can be floated over an underlay (except parquet block).  It is actually the quickest and easiest way to install your bamboo as it eliminates the need for glue or nails. Both solid and engineered bamboo flooring can be floated.

When would I need to use an underlay?

You will need an underlay if you decide to float your bamboo floor.  You can float over an underlay on almost any subfloor that has been properly prepared.  Ideal subfloors for floating bamboo are, concrete, screed, floorboards or plywood.  The only times that you cannot float bamboo over an underlay is if you have parquet block bamboo, you are fitting over joists, or you are installing into a commercial property.

Which underlay should I use for bamboo flooring?

The type of underlay that you choose will depend upon your requirements:

• If you have underfloor heating, you will want a special underfloor heating underlay which has a very low tog rating.

• For thermal insulation the higher the tog rating the better.

• If you require sound resistance, look for the decibel (dB) rating. The higher the dB rating the more sound proofing your will get.

• If you are just looking for a standard underlay, we would highly recommend Silver Bam Underlay.

How do I install bamboo over an underlay?

Installing bamboo flooring over an underlay is very straight forward.  Start by cutting the underlay to the size of the room and roll it out.  If you need to join pieces of underlay together, use this Vapour Tape.  Now start with one edge of the room and fit the bamboo flooring planks together.

If you are using T&G bamboo, you will need to apply WPVA glue in the joints.

If you are using click bamboo, simply click and lock the planks together.  Keep repeating this process taking care that the pattern being created by the planks is suitable to your taste.  Some people like randomly placed planks, whereas others prefer a brick bond effect.  Remember to leave an expansion gap around the edge of the room. When the floor has been installed you can cover this gap with flooring accessories.

Always read the instructions in the box of flooring fully and carefully before installing any bamboo flooring.
